First Timer’s Guide to Cannabis:

You’re over 21 and ready to try recreational cannabis for the first time. You don’t know what to expect and you’re slightly scared and excited all at the same time. So many questions are running through your head but you have nobody to turn to because you don’t want to seem inexperienced or uncool. Well our advice is that “the expert of everything was once a beginner”, so with the right guidance and proper information, you’ll do just fine. Plus, with us guiding you through this major moment in your life, you have nothing to worry about, trust us and repeat “I’m going to get high for the very first time and it’s going to be awesome.” Oh and don’t forget to take a selfie, it’s 20 freakin 17, weed is legal and the sun is shining, life is good.

How Much Do I Smoke For the First Time?

It’s important to understand that everybody has a different tolerance to cannabis. Remember, it’s a mind altering substance so you definitely won’t want to play puff-puff-pass during your first time and risk having a panic attack or greening out. We recommend taking one puff of a joint and waiting about 20 minutes to see how it affects you. If you don’t feel like you’re in a euphoric dream-like state yet, you can take a few more hits and wait. The only person who will know when you’re comfortably high is you so take it slow and let the trial and error begin.

What Should I Smoke?

Each strain of marijuana is made up of CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) in different amounts that stimulate the feeling and strength of your high. CBD’s are a psychoactive compound that make you feel calm and relaxed and are typically used for pain relief, anxiety, and as an anti-inflammatory. THC is more psychological and is what many people would attribute the high you feel when consuming cannabis to. For first timers, it’s a good idea to pay attention to how much THC verses CBD is in each strain while you’re shopping. Opt for a strain that highlights a high percentage of CBD to slightly ease into your first experience. You’ll also want to pay attention to terpenes which are organic compounds that affect the aroma and flavor of your weed and each type offers different medical and psychological benefits.

We recommend keeping a strain diary as you continue to taste test so that you can keep record of the THC, CBD and Terpenes variations that work best for you.

There are three strains to choose from. Indica, Sativa and a Hybrid.

Indica strains tend to make you feel calm- almost sedated, and offer more of a full body high. If you’re looking to Netflix and chill, eat some snacks and take a nap, indica is perfect for you.

Sativa strains offer the complete opposite affect and are great for a daytime high. They promote a happy euphoric feeling, boost your creativity and are more of an uplifting head high. If you’re planning to get high and do something fun you’ll want to go with a sativa or sativa dominant strain.

Hybrid strains, just like it sounds, is a mash up of both indica and sativa for those of you  looking for a combination high. Explain the high you’re looking to achieve and your budtender can recommend a nice hybrid to get the job done. 

What Should I Do If I Get Too High?

Take a deep breathe and definitely DO NOT CALL YOUR MOM. We all get too high sometimes and trust us, it’s no biggie. The good news is that nobody has died from marijuana overdose and you likely won’t be the one to change that stat. If you feel like you’re on the verge of a panic attack just eat a snack, go watch a movie or lay down and take a power nap. Your high will continue to be less intense as each minute passes so understand that this will all be over soon and you’ll be fine. Remember that time you drank way too much and thought you needed to go to the hospital for alcohol poisoning but then you just ate some toast and slept it off? It’s the same idea here. Go with the high and try to enjoy yourself.

Should I Mix Marijuana and Alcohol? 

We don’t recommend mixing the two substances. It will intensify the effects of both and could very well lead to a bad experience. You can green-out which causes you to be in a panic like state where you’re nauseous, dizzy and sweaty (and who the hell wants to deal with that ,talk about a night ruiner). Combining the two may also cause extreme paranoia among other side effects so stick to one vice at a time. Don’t be a dummy, consume responsibility.
